Mojave PPPC with camera captures in Lost Mode

Let us help you. Please tell us about…

  • Affected device (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone): Mac laptops
  • Operating system (Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, Ubuntu, Fedora): macOS Mojave 10.14.3
  • Part of Prey not working (Prey account, mobile app, a specific action or module, reports): Webcam captures in Lost Mode

Could you please describe the problem?

Is there any way to silently deploy Prey that has camera captures enabled without end-user intervention? We want to deploy this for our stolen hardware, but whenever we push the pkg installer from Jamf, it prompts to enable camera access from Privacy Preferences Policy Control and if the end user clicks Don’t Allow, we’d never be able to track those captures. PPPC does not have it in spec to ALLOW access to camera/microphone by default, so we aren’t able to set that from the Jamf (or any MDM for that matter because this is Apple’s spec) from the backend. We also tried running sudo -u "$3" open "/usr/local/lib/prey/current/lib/agent/utils/Prey.app" --args -picture but that didn’t activate it in PPPC to use the camera either.

Hi there,

This can’t be done, I’m sorry. This Apple policy can’t be bypassed via MDM.
