"unable to reach device" after Prey update

I checked Prey downloads and found that a newer version is available than what is installed on my laptop (even though Prey is set to update automatically!). I installed the new version (1.8.1) on the desktop and laptop. I checked the Prey control panel and found the desktop is located accurately and within the last few minutes.

the laptop location hasn’t been updated for “14hrs” (or “24 hrs” depending on which part of screen I look at), about the time I updated it. when I ask to ‘update location’ is gives error message “unable to reach device”.

I have tried reinstalling the update on laptop and rebooting.
What is wrong?

I re-installed older version 1.7, x64. this worked immediately. Laptop located.

Either version 1.8.3 x86 is defective, or perhaps it is because it is x86? which seems to be the only option under download.

I got new a hard drive, reinstalled Prey and got the same “unable to reach device” message. I then found this thread, uninstalled the new version, installed the old one, seems to solve the problem. Thank you @astro46 !
